"How to be optimistic"
Today is January 17, and it's a pretty nasty day here in New York. No sun at all and I forgot my hat, so the cold rain falling on my bald head makes it worse. Gotta force myself to smile today.
And that's what I want to speak to you about, smiling through adversity. I have a Bachelors degree in Sociology which is probably why I always find myself looking for ways to motivate people, specifically fibromyalgia sufferers.
In school I studied the works of many psychologists. One in particular who made a huge difference in the way I live my life was Martin Seligman, Ph.D.
He is still around and telling whoever will listen that living optimistically is the only way to live. And even If you are not optimistic, fear not, because you are able to learn how to be. This is extremely important to those of you who have still not begun exercise for your fibromyalgia treatment.
Dr. Seligman has found through his studies that our own self talk (the way we say things to ourselves), has a tremendous impact on not only ourselves but on those around us, (think your children.)
We all speak and think negatively from time to time. Dr. Seligman has found that by simply changing our negative statements from Permanent to Temporary, can make a huge difference in how we think and behave.
So comments like "I feel like crap, I will never get better", which is a permanent statement, should simply be rephrased as "Today I feel like crap, like I will never get better", which is a temporary statement. By simply adding the word "today" changes how you make yourself feel.
It used to be thought that fibromyalgia was all in your head. It's not, but what if you let the symptoms of fibromyalgia create in you a negative mindset?
So I am here to tell you that the first step to exercise and diet for fibromyalgia, is not getting up early or eating this instead of that. The first step is becoming optimistic and getting excited about what your life can be with just a few simple changes.
Fibromyalgia sucks! Don't let it suck the life you have out of you! Think, act, and begin to feel healthy today.
